Where two applications require to communicate, a Sandwich Interface is inserted that avoids the need for direct contact between the applications. This means that modification to either application that changes the format or location of some shared data is absorbed by the interface layer which is far smaller and less complicated to modify than the destination application. This is especially beneficial where perhaps many applications are the destination for a single piece of data and would otherwise require those applications to be updated for the sake of a single change in the source application.
